What are some fun Christmas traditions from your family of origin?
My extended family has always had a blah sort of holiday season. Well, now all the "kids" are grown up and we are wanting to start some fun, family traditions for future generations. Any ideas would be much appreciated!
Love and Christmas,
The Wick family
We open all family presents on Christmas eve. We don’t get as many presents as when we were kids, so mom divys up the presents and then we go around one at a time and open one gift, then it is the next person’s turn to open one gift, etc and keep taking turns until all the presents are opened. We do this so we can all enjoy what everyone gets (when we were kids though, we would all just open our presents together since obviously kids can’t wait to do it one at a time. LOL). Then on Christmas morning, Santa still comes. And yes, we are all grown. But what’s fun is we even sneak "santa" gifts out for my mom too. And it’s a free-for-all. We all just rush out to the tree and find our gifts and open them. We each get about one or two. And we still get our stockings filled too. It’s really fun.
What traditions do you have that celebrate the true meaning of Easter?
I love coloring eggs and going to Easter Egg hunts. But what traditions do you have that remind you of the true meaning of Easter?
I heard about a tradition where you make rolls, but you wrap the dough around a marshmallow. When they are done they are hollow, or empty, like the tomb.

My mama used to do this with me and I enjoyed it very much! I’m not sure if this is the exact recipe mine used but it sounds like it will work. Have fun. It is good to incorporate your believes intio something fun to express to your kids.
What customs/traditions did the Irish bring to America when they immigrated in the 1800s?
I can’t find anything! Please help!
–St. Patrick’s Day.
–Incredible literature. Irish immigrants who became famous in the arts include Eugene O’Neill (won the Pulitzer and the Nobel Prize), F. Scott Fitzgerald, Raymond Chandler, Georgia O’Keefe (painter), Henry James (he was part Irish), and Flannery O’Connor
–Sports like hurling and Gaelic football
–"The urban Irish cop and firefighter are virtual icons of American popular culture. In many large cities, the police and fire departments have been dominated by the Irish for over 100 years, even after the populations in those cities of Irish extraction dwindled down to small minorities. Many police and fire departments maintain large and active "Emerald Societies", bagpipe marching groups, or other similar units demonstrating their members’ pride in their Irish heritage."

How different is the culture in the UK compared to the US? What are some differences/similarities?
I’m traveling to Leeds, England to study abroad, and I’m from Minnesota and I was wondering what to expect from interacting with people there and how it compares to here in the US. I’m not worried about culture shock, but I’m curious to see how different or similar people are there.
Envy come to the chat… And answer his q you british bytch lol
Where does the tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow of a ship originate from?
This ceremony is done prior to the commissioning of the ship. Question is what is the meaning / tradition of it.
Where does the tradition of breaking a bottle of champagne over the bow come from?
The origins of the tradition go back to the time of the Vikings. When they launched their longboats they used the blood of their prisoners to "oil" the skids.
Then the Greeks also "oiled" the skids with blood when launching their ships.
Later shipbuilders, just became a bit less sanguine, and a little more civil… and began using "wine poured on red ribbons" on the skids as a substitute.
Wine also stood in for blood for many-many years.
Until ships became so big, and launching a ship became "a big deal"… Then champagne became the more festive and prestigious substitute for pouring wine on the skids.
Can u please read this essay and comment on it…it is an interesting essay!?
What happened in the past can never be changed, not even by God, is a logic accepted by all. But, some scientists (mostly evolutionists) have proven that they can defy this statement and rewrite history based on “scientific evidence.” These evidences are not based on data gathered by observation, instead it’s purely built on their faith; that there is no God. An example of this can be seen in scientists’ perspective on a worldwide flood, like the one described in Genesis. They argue that a cataclysmic global flood is absurd and that it should be treated as a myth. This conclusion was not based on facts, instead on their atheistic beliefs. On the other hand, if one were to observe the physical evidence, then one can reasonably conclude that a global flood did occur and did alter the earth completely. The Genesis flood is supported by the fossil record, the stratigraphic evidences, and the archaeological evidences. Most people believe that the layers of fossils took millions of years to form, but this understanding of the fossils is erroneous and not based on facts. A gradual build up of fossils cannot be proven and if it is true we would still be witnessing the process. Dr. Guy Berthault, a geologist, has performed many experiments that show that a spontaneous layering occurs with a sand, mud, and clay slurry. He argues that the only explanation of these fossil layers, found in every continent, is a global flood.[1] Another evidence for a global deluge is the occurrence of the fossils of plants/animals miles away from their natural habitat. Fossils of warm habitat animals are found near the poles and marine and ocean fossils are found on continents’ interior mountains. In fact, 95% of all fossils are marine invertebrates.[2] This universal displacement and the formation of fossils clearly show valid evidences for a Noahic Flood. Similarly, stratigraphic (relating to sedimentary rocks) evidences also support the Genesis story. Ripple formations found in sedimentary rocks are very common, and they can only be formed by the abundance of strong water current in a wide area. Edwin D. McKee, who is the world’s foremost authority on ripple formation, summarized his findings by saying, “The chief significance of ripple lamination in the geologic record is that it is an indicator of environments involving large and rapid sand accumulation. Ripple marks on most tidal flats and beaches or in comparable areas where addition of new sand normally is at a slow rate, have little chance of developing into superimposed ripple lamination (i.e., climbing ripples or ripples-in-phase). In contrast, areas in which sand accumulates periodically but rapidly, as in river flood plains where sand-laden waters of strong floods suddenly lose velocity, are very favorable for building up ripple-laminated deposits.” [3] The Genesis flood could adequately explain the ripple formation on the sedimentary rocks. Stratigraphic evidence that supports the worldwide flood is the formation of coal, a sedimentary rock. Coal, has always been found with marine fossils and it can only be formed by rapid burial.[4] Even scientists who do not believe in the Noahic Flood say that coal can only be formed in a flood like condition. More studies need to done on the relationship between coal and the deluge, but the flood origin of coal is certain. Furthermore, Archeological evidence clearly supports the idea of a Global Flood. Civilization appears to have originated in the Aarat/ Babylon region where Noah and his family settled. This would explain the dispersion of Noah’s three sons from the Babylon region into the other three areas: Europe, Africa, and Asia. Also, the ancient artifact we have today date back to the post- flood era, indicating that materials before that time would have been buried by a huge flood. Another key evidence is all the worldwide traditions among natives of a global flood. From the Ancient Greeks to the Indians, from the Babylonians to the Irish, every culture has a story about God punishing mankind with a flood and a lone survivor.[5] The stories and the physical evidence revels a cataclysmic event that clearly changed the course of history. In conclusion, one can see the indications of a worldwide flood as described in Genesis by observing the fossil record, the stratigraphic evidences and the archaeological evidences. Basing your science on facts and not beliefs will provide you with the means of accurately uncovering events in history and preparing for the future.
Impressive. I wouldn’t change a thing.
Is the South African tradition of expecting petrol pump attendants to have detailed navigation systems built?
into their minds also a common occurence in foreign countries?
Have you ever noticed how we always stop at a petrol station when lost and automatically expect the attendants to know the exact location of our destination and that they usually do?
Is this only a South African custom or world wide practise?
Great observation…
Reminds me of an incident. My fiance and I were fetching a Rustenburg choir doing shoots in Joburg. Some girl who’d been here once and thought she knew the place had gotten them lost. We called and they said they were at a Sasol on #11, we asked them to ask a garage attendant where that was exactly. The lady on the phone did so and was calmly told by the attendant that she’s at a garage…. What killed me was that she relayed the information back to us… oi!!!
