What were the principle contributions to jazz from African musical traditions?

Blues and jazz are spin-offs of black gospel. Also, country music is a spin-off of Irish folk songs. Rock-n-roll is the result of combining blues, jazz, and country.

African music contributed rhythmic variety. European music contributed melody and harmony. Over a period of time, they combined into a new, uniquely American art form: jazz.

If you are writing a paper on this subject, you should include the drummer Art Blakey. He bought African drumming to jazz in a big way.
