I am going to be using illustration markers, color pencils and oil paint. Just drop me a line if you have any questions
In step 1 I scanned and reprinted my original drawing- I do this for 2 reasons- 1.) If I mess up, I could just reprint it and 2.) marker and color pencil coexist better with printer ink than with graphite from a pencil.
Next I add a layer of the illustration markers. These markers are totally transparent and they enable me to add a layer of color and still be able to see the lines from my pencil drawing. These markers give the artist a similar effect to watercolor paint, but without the messy setup and clean up.. I am still following the Polaroid picture development analogy from the first video- in that I am adding color to all areas at an even pace and slowly building up the darker tones on the sides and bottom of the glass.
The color pencil is great at this point of the drawing, because it adds a translucent layer of color above the marker. In addition to that, color pencils are mixed with wax. The wax will be very handy in the next step when I add oil paint on top of the marker and color pencil. Working with color pencil also allows me to be very precise with my marks on the page. It can be very challenging to be as accurate with a paint brush. This step allows me to make my drawing more accurate and these clarifications will eventually be absorbed by the oil paint.
Now you are going to see me add three layers of oil paint to finish my drawing. I am using oil paint because I want to edit the colors of this composition and it is much easier to mix and match color with oil paint than it is with color pencil. It is also easier to apply large areas of color with a paintbrush rather than the tiny tip of a pencil. I did all of my editing in the last step and now I am just applying color, trying to notice the nuances of the edges of each shape on my reference. If I need to soften an edge I use a dry, soft brush and I pull the paint with that. The color pencil from the layer below is blending nicely with the paint.

No worries, I always reply. You are absolutely correct about computer paper and paint. I use 110 LB Bleedproof paper (Borden and Riley) Its made for illustration markers but its thick enough for paint. Thanks for checking out my video and my channel!

what type of paper …
what type of paper did you use for the final draft. I wouldn’t think that a regular piece of computer paper would take marker, colored pencil, and oil paint without just mushing up. Haha. Reply please

When you first …
When you first started painting the cup, I thought you totally messed up. It looked really bad, and even though it was still a working progress, I couldn’t see how it would look good. But the final picture does look really good. This stunned me even more when you were drawing it with graphite and charcoal. The way you scribbled all over the background then smudged it with a paper towel! Ya, teachers will always tell you that that’s a bad idea. But it looks awesome man!! Way to go, I love it.

I like canvas but I like paper on wood panel better….Kind of the more cost effective route….Also a lot of times I incorporate a scanner, photoshop/paint shop pro and a printer with my art. Check out Either “Caffeine Junkie Coffee People” or the video on my channel page (Making a Gangsta) to see what I mean. Thanks for commenting!

Good question! Ok.. …
Good question! Ok…First recommendation that I have is to look in to drawing pencils. There is a system ranging from 8H (lightest) to 8B (Darkest). It goes like this 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H. 3H. 2H, HB (HB is the same tone as a #2 pencil) 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B. Each pencil will give you a different tone. In addition to that, like you said, different pressures with the pencil will make things lighter and darker. One more suggestion but I am running out of room in this box.

That was amazing!!! it came together so well! good job =)
I have a question, Ive been noticing alot of people are now creating black and white drawings, Ive been trying to create some myself but the whole shading light color and dark color throughs me off. How do artist get that black and white effect? do they just color darker and ligter for some areas? or do they use some kind of smudging tool to thin it out?? Gahh I need help =p

5.) Dabbled around for a while trying everything and forcing myself to finish a work in one day (SOME OF MY PAINTINGS HAVE TAKEN ME A YEAR TO MAKE!!!)
6.) I am still dabbling and I am sure that it will change again!!!

Heres what happened …
Heres what happened: (Its a kinda sorta timeline)
1.) Learned the importance of layering from when I took courses in painting in college.
2.) Tried to paint when I got out of college and forced the issue for years. (Painting is such a time consuming process and I DIDNT feel like doing it after coming home from work.)
3.) Got EXTREMELY frustrated b/c I was creating so little
4.) Started to shift my materials to fit my needs- (I needed to find a process that wouldnt exhaust me even more)…more
