Is the South African tradition of expecting petrol pump attendants to have detailed navigation systems built?

into their minds also a common occurence in foreign countries?
Have you ever noticed how we always stop at a petrol station when lost and automatically expect the attendants to know the exact location of our destination and that they usually do?
Is this only a South African custom or world wide practise?

Great observation…

Reminds me of an incident. My fiance and I were fetching a Rustenburg choir doing shoots in Joburg. Some girl who’d been here once and thought she knew the place had gotten them lost. We called and they said they were at a Sasol on #11, we asked them to ask a garage attendant where that was exactly. The lady on the phone did so and was calmly told by the attendant that she’s at a garage…. What killed me was that she relayed the information back to us… oi!!!

We hope that they should know every corner in their vicinity. I hardly ask for directions, I prefer to get lost – that way I learn the city/town quickly. But on the few occasions (I don’t think I’ve asked directions more than ten times in my entire life) I always ask them. I would prefer to ask the postmen but I don’t even know where to get them in the first place!!

I don’t remember it being done in other countries that I lived in or visited!!!!

Good observation , i think it does happen world-wide , on shows like the amazing race for eg , the contestants usually ask for directions , etc at petrol stations…

Filling up with petrol in the UK is self service so you would end up talking to yourself. Alternatively when you go into the shop to pay and enquire the answer always seems to be "I dunno mate."
