do african american spirituals have roots in africa?

Posted by admin on March 10th, 2010 and filed under african tradition | 2 Comments »

like, are they based on african music traditions of the continent.
I am not sure about afro-american music being based on church music, since I happen to know that African traditional music uses harmony singing more than most folk musics.

It’s a good question, and one that is pondered by musicologists.

What is accepted is that most drum rhythms were brought to the American continent from Africa for the purposes of storytelling, social gathering and songs. It’s also believed that European church music, plus other forms of music mixed with African rhythms is how the blues and jazz were born in the US.

Has African traditional system in anyway contributed to civilisation?

Posted by admin on March 8th, 2010 and filed under african tradition | 2 Comments »

It is beleived in some quaters that african tradition has not in way aided the civilisation process of the world. The aim of the question is to ascertain to what degree is that assertion true with facts.

Of course Africa was the origin of civilization. Timbuktu, Egypt, etc were all the cradle of civilization. It is only in Africa where the oldest evidence of civilization can be found and especially in East Africa.

Dr. Richard Leakey the world reknowed archeologist discovered traces of the earliest forms of civilization from Olduvai in Kenya.

Whether the traditions of Africa have aided in civilization of today, we will need to redefine civilization because if what you mean is western civilization, then indeed the African context does not come in question.

However there are definitely aspects of African tradition especially in the medicine field which have been heavily borrowed from in the development of the latest technology in Medicine. Many of these drugs that we use today are mere refinements of what was being used traditionally by Africa.

You can also look at the African tradition contributing immensely to the cultural melting pot. Clothing, music, et al of the contemporary (read civilised) society has much influence from the African traditional ways of life.

So African traditions have very much contributed and still contribute to civilization aspects of the world of yester years, today and tommorows.

Traditions? I can not say for sure but we all love PAP. Nobody in the world loves PAP as much as we do! And I prefer to eat stywe pap with my fingers. The Germans are not impressed with pap, nor the way I eat it!
