My friend your question has landed in the wrong section of Yahoo! Answers. The special education section isn’t for questions about traditions and customs. The special education section is for questions about disabilities; learning disability, emotional disturbance, bi-polar, autism, dyslexia, oppositional defiant disorder, reactive attachment disorder and many other similar disabilities. It’s also for parents who have a child with a disability, special education law, IEP’s and other similar types of questions. This poor section gets the most misplaced questions out of any section in Yahoo! Answers. Please resubmit your question in the Society & Culture > Holidays > Other – Holidays. Or you can place your question in the Entertainment & Music > Polls & Surveys section of Yahoo! Answers.

Place: London, England
Class: Middle/Rich

I’m trying to do some research for this book I’m writing about time travelers, and am trying to get familiarized with the years 1862, to be exact.

How strict were people on marriage in those days?
How old were some girls when their parents forced them to marry?
Did they ever get to marry who they wanted?

Romance leading to marriage as a general social practice took awhile to catch on.
I would read several of Charles Dickens’ novels to glean the information on romance and marriage. I am a little suspicious Dickens’ popular writings may have played a part in the liberation of women in this manner of behaviour.
Divorce would hardly be something you heard of. If things were too bad (for those who could afford it) there could be ‘separations’.
Lifespans were becoming longer but social praxis likely was slow to catch on especially in the middle and lower classes. Likely men at 21 and women at 18 were among the oldest to wed.
Hope this is of some help.
You could try looking in some textbooks dealing with the Industrial Revolution to see if there are passages dealing with changing social praxis.

And why?

I love going to church on Christmas eve and everyone has those little white candles and we sing songs, it’s one of my favorites because it’s been a tradition since my first Christmas, and it’s celebrating the true meaning of Christmas!
Another tradition is every year my sister and I sneak around the house all night on Christmas eve, waiting for "Santa" to come, we always set up a fort in the living room and then set up a plan to try and see "Santa" (I don’t really believe in him but my sister does) this is a tradition we have had since I was 4 and my sister was 2, and we still do it, this will be the 10th time doing that tradition!
Out other tradition is watching Mickey’s Christmas on Christmas eve, that tradition has been with us since my sister’s first Christmas!

Those are my 3 favorite Christmas traditions, even though I have more

My friend and I are doing a project about China and fireworks. It is a Power Point slide show presentation and we wanted one slide about their traditions and customs that involve fireworks. For example: births, deaths, weddings, holidays and please don’t write all about Chinese New Year. It would be an extreme help to give your source, but you don’t HAVE to. Thanks.

                        ♥Jennifer

The earliest unequivocal documentation of fireworks dates back to 12th century China,[1] where they were first used to frighten away evil spirits with their loud sound (鞭炮/鞭砲 biān pào) and also to pray for happiness and prosperity.

Eventually, the art and science of firework making developed into an independent profession. In ancient China, pyrotechnicians (firework-masters) were well-respected for their knowledge and skill in mounting dazzling displays of light and sound. Fireworks may have also led to the use of military rockets in China. A record in 1264 states that the speed of the rocket-propelled ‘ground-rat’ firework frightened the Empress Dowager Gong Sheng during a feast held in her honor by her son Emperor Lizong of Song (r. 1224–1264).[2] By the 14th century, rocket propulsion had become common in warfare, as evidenced by the Huolongjing compiled by Liu Ji (1311–1375) and Jiao Yu (fl. c. 1350–1412).[3]

Since then, any event—a birth, wedding, coronation or New Year’s Eve celebration—has become a fitting occasion for noisemakers.

Amédée-François Frézier published a "Treatise on Fireworks" in 1706, covering the recreational and ceremonial uses of fireworks, rather than their military uses. The book became a standard text for fireworks makers.

Music for the Royal Fireworks was composed by George Frideric Handel in 1749 to celebrate the peace Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which had been declared the previous year.

In Bali, Balinese Hinduism is practiced as opposed to the rest of Indonesia which is a muslim nation. In Bali, when a baby in born, the placenta is buried under the door at the entrance to the house. People have their teeth filed before they get married. (they believe that our youthful teeth resemble the teeth of an animal, therefor before a wedding, a bride and groom have their teeth filed to the same size) Balinese leave treats at the front entrance of a home or business. These treats are left to "evil spirits" so that they would not harm the home or business. People in Bali believe that there are people in their midst who have supernetural powers, they are called Lyaks. These people can be singled out by looking into their eyes. If you look into a peson’s eyes, and you see yourself upsidedown, than that person is LYAK!
The Balinese creamate their dead. They are kind, honest, wonderful people who tolerate and respect other religions and people. Bali is a beautiful island.

This piece of information is vital to my Canada project due TOMORROW.

this all depends on what type of canadians u are talkin about. for us, (haidas) we have many traditions that most canadians don’t practice…such a potlatches. but we are native canadians, not european canadians.

the european descended canadians have similar customs and traditions as most other nations related to the english empire. usa, australia, etc. of course in canada we also have the french influence (mainly quebec and new brunswick) so in those places they have more emphasis on french traditions.
