What are "man made traditions" and why are fundamentalist Christians so opposed to them?
After all, the Bible was written by man, too.
And what about the period before the Bible was written? Traditions were all you HAD. I fail to see what is so horrible about traditions in and of themselves.
Fundamentalist protestants see as ‘man made traditions" anything not part of their traditions
Jesus meant such things as negated His teachings or the ethics of the Torah
Non Fundamentalist Christians tend to see FP customs, traditions and teachings as "man made tradition" or borrowed from other Christians such as Catholics or Methodists
All Jewish and Christian teachings and customs( just about) were orally given before they were written down( if they were written down in the Bible at all) and that goes for those the Fps uphold
Fps will fight endlessly among themselves over what customs are ‘man made" and are to be rejected
Atheists: Do you ever feel sad about the lack of traditions, holidays and community bonds in atheism?
Religion and it’s practices does have a fair amount of traditions, holidays, celebrations and brings a bit of community bonding, yet we do not have those things within atheism. Religion also passes on these things to other generations. Atheism really has nothing in the way of celebrations or traditions to pass on to future generations.
Putting aside all the boring and scary sermons do you ever look at religion with some sort of admiration for the "societal bonding" that takes place?
I think these things may come in time. This may be an answer to the age old drink question: Why are atheists in R&S? Why? Because you guys are awesome!
EDIT – Wow! Do we have our first Black Israelite on R&S?
Preach on Black Truth! Thumbs up from me – I love diversity!
Christians how can the ways and traditions of the pagans be harmless?
When God tells His people not to have anything to do with traditions of men?
No I do not celebrate Christmas
No I do not Ccelebrate Easter either
You have it right. They are not harmless. Though few get physically hurt, the damage to our spirits goes much deeper.
"When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord, and because of these detestable practices the Lord your God will drive out those nations before you."
Deuteronomy 18:9-13
If we imitate the things of the world and of pagan origin, how can we be set apart? We cannot serve two masters. We compromise our faith when we participate in things like these. Even if we are just dipping our toes in it we’re still getting wet. And many who continue to do this get deeper and more involved, and compromise themselves more and more.
Are there any traditions a woman should carry out when proposed to?
My partner says he wishes to propose to me over the next couple of months, and having a down to earth relationship, we have talked everything through- I was wondering are there any traditions the woman could carry out during the engagement? I know of a couple who both wore engagement rings, but understand this to be a newer tradition and being an old fashioned gal, would like to carry it out as a traditional English celebration. Thanks!
You act surprised, you cry, you squeal, you hug him, you are overjoyed. Sorry, but that’s all I’ve got.
What are some of your family traditions for Christmas?
My family always gets a real tree and decorates it. We always bake cookies together. I love the holidays. What are some of your family traditions?
Ooh I just love Christmas. (: my family decorates, looks at the street that has tons of christmas lights on it, bakes, go to san francisco to shop for about a week, and visits about every relative near by
and it’s just amazing.
How did the Christianization of Europe affect literary traditions?
I’m working on a research paper, and this is my topic.
This is my thesis statement:
The Christianization of Europe affected literary traditions by intertwining new Christian beliefs with old pagan traditions, making literature less for entertainment purposes and more for teaching Christian doctrine, and by reflecting the power of the church.
** Any ideas for: "making literature less for entertainment purposes and more for teaching Christian doctrine, and by reflecting the power of the church"?
well i believe the Church had literature printed in Latin therefore only educated people could read books such as the bible (teaching Christian doctrine)
this also demonstrated its power since books were the gateway to knowledge in that time and they controlled who could actually read them by printing them in Latin….for more in depth knowlege try googling it or just find it in your textbook…

Dying traditions in Malaysian Borneo – 19 Jan 08
For centuries, the rainforest has been at the centre of cultural and religious life for indigenous people in Malaysian Borneo.
But as the country develops, younger people are giving up the traditions of their ancestors.
Missionaries have persuaded many to change religion, while others have abandoned their villages for the towns.
Divya Gopalan went to eastern Malaysia to meet the Bidayuh people of Sarawak.
