This video, originally titled “Culture en Péril (Version Longue)”, was created by a few Québec artists to denounce the cuts in cultural funding by the Conservative governement, led by Stephen Harper. This extended version of the original includes english subtitles.

When Beau Dommage’s Michel Rivard visits a newly formed governmental committee overseeing cultural financing, language gaps and cultural misunderstandings abounds, mostly when Rivard plays his classical song, “La Complainte du Phoque en Alaska” (The Complaint of the Seal in Alaska)…

***I received a message about this video from the original creators, so I assume it’s accepted that my subtitled version doesn’t interfere with their intellectual property.***

  2. midterm360 says:

    Sorry but Canada …
Sorry but Canada wouldn’t be “nothing” without french people it would be missing alot but it WOULD NOT be “nothing”. Si vous parlez pas l’anglais, Le Canada ne serai PAS rien sans les francophone, oui c’est vrai qu’elle aurait manqué quelques aspects sans les francophone, mais pour dire que le Canada serai rien? Vouz êtes FOU.

  3. TAXtheAtheist says:

    I hate “Your” …
    I hate “Your” culture.

  4. cosminsmeu says:

    J’ai dit ça …
    J’ai dit ça ironiquement! :)

  5. Vineon says:

    Très bonne …
Très bonne intervention, bien que quelque peu tardive!

  6. UnspokenRequest says:

    “Quebec is SCARED …
“Quebec is SCARED that businesses will choose english, that parents will choose english rather than french, that english will become accepted.”
Replace the word “is SCARED” by “KNOWS”
Quebec knows, because this is what was going on before Bill 101 was enacted.
Most signs were in English only, the vast majority of immigrants sent their children to English schools.
French would be in poor shape by now if nothing had been done to stop this trend. Bill 101 did a lot to save French for a generation.

  7. UnspokenRequest says:

    I’ve often argued …
I’ve often argued with Americans who hated Hispanics (I’ve studied this question), but at least they were aware of their racism. They wanted them out of their country and they had no moral problem with their hate.
Read some of your comments here, sir. Then, look at yourself in the mirror. You propagated hate and prejudices for all the world to see.
    Sir, you are a racist.

  8. UnspokenRequest says:

    I’ve probably never …
I’ve probably never come across someone who showed so much hate, so much prejudices toward other peoples on, while being totally unaware of just how racist he actually was.
You really live in a world of hate and ignorance.
You stand there attacking an entire society you have very few real knowledge about.

  9. UnspokenRequest says:

    You obviously had …
You obviously had very very few contact with Quebec and Quebecers. Your claims are just too outlandish.

Therefore, I invite you to come to Quebec for a few months. I’m serious about this.

Your racism and your prejudices are based on a complete ignorance about what Quebec really is. I’d like you to get a dose of reality.

I’ve got Anglos, Francos and friends from other cultures who could show you around Montreal, Québec city and the regions.

  10. UnspokenRequest says:

    What is false is …
What is false is the fact that gays can’t get married in Qc.

  11. UnspokenRequest says:

    “And you should …
“And you should check up on your election laws… In order to vote, you only have to prove citizenship and residency, NOT language proficiency…”
Immigrants can’t have citizenship (can’t vote) if they don’t pass an english or french test. That is what he said.
“Unlike in Quebec, where I’m SURE scrutineers were hostile to those who didn’t speak french.”
Baseless accusations. You’re ignorant and proud to display it for the world to see.

  12. UnspokenRequest says:

    Are you aware that …
Are you aware that almost every cities in North America has laws regarding what can or cannot be done with commercial signs.

The size of the signs are often regulated (not too big). The light it produces is also often regulated (too bright). For instance, historic parts of cities often have stricter laws in order to preserve the look of the area.
No nudity, no profanity. These are classic legislations regarding what can or cannot be shown on signs.
    Businesses never had absolute freedom.

  13. UnspokenRequest says:

    Just plain false.
    Just plain false.

  14. UnspokenRequest says:

    “Quebec is a …
“Quebec is a repressive, backwards, isolated, fearful little part of Canada, stuck in the 1800′s.”
    Ignorance, prejudice, racism.
    Ugly.

  15. UnspokenRequest says:

    He is right.
    Ever …

    He is right.
Ever heard of Haut-Canada and Bas-Canada?

You should also read about the history of immigration in Canada. You’d learn about the racial and language rankings made by the government. English at the top, than Scots, Irish, germans. French was in the middle. If I remember correctly, it was just above Italians, spaniards and other “latins” people. Then there were Asians, Blacks and other “dark-skin” people.

Immigration and racial hierarchy went hand in hand in Canada.

  16. UnspokenRequest says:

    It is the Canadian …
It is the Canadian army that intervened at Oka. Ottawa AND Quebec f ucked up.
What about the Grand river land dispute in Ontario. Still not resolved. Plenty of violence

  17. UnspokenRequest says:

    “Burying your head …
“Burying your head in the sand is not very Canadian. Quebecker? Maybe, but certainly not Canadian.”
    Racism

  18. UnspokenRequest says:

    You are ridiculous. …
You are ridiculous. I dare you to talk with the Tibetan community of Montreal. See what they think about your stupid comparisons.
Again, shame on you for trivializing the suffering of oppressed people like the Tibetans. You obviously have no idea what they are going through. Otherwise, you wouldn’t make these offensive comments.

  19. UnspokenRequest says:

    Being angry is not …
Being angry is not the same thing as being oppressed.

I’m angry at Harper for not doing anything on the environnment. Am I oppressed? No.

Check the definition of oppression. Using such words so lightly, trivializes real oppression. My girlfriend’s mother is Iranian. SHE knows about oppression.
Shame on you! I can’t help but think about all the oppressed people in the world, many would punch you in the face for equating their dire situation with the good life anglos have in Qc.

  20. UnspokenRequest says:

    You’re insane!

    You’re insane!
Arguing on the Internet is a form of abuse!

  21. UnspokenRequest says:

    He said IMMIGRANTS!
    He said IMMIGRANTS!

  22. UnspokenRequest says:

    “that Quebec …
“that Quebec society is backwards and scared.”
If that is not racism. I don’t know what is racism.

Replace Quebec society, by African societies… You’ll get just how racist you really are.

  23. UnspokenRequest says:

    The debate you had …
The debate you had was not on funding. It was on the fact that you claimed Quebec was cultureless, even though its movies thrive at the Canadian box office, even though it has its own star system, its own tv shows.
Of course you know nothing about it. just like you probably know nothing about Portuguese’s cultural scene.
An ignorant full of prejudices and preconceived ideas, that is what you are.

  24. nclusiau says:

    Criss que les …
Criss que les anglos sont épais..hahaha

  25. Fry1989HD says:
