How different is the culture in the UK compared to the US? What are some differences/similarities?

I’m traveling to Leeds, England to study abroad, and I’m from Minnesota and I was wondering what to expect from interacting with people there and how it compares to here in the US. I’m not worried about culture shock, but I’m curious to see how different or similar people are there.

There are lots of little differences in culture, but nothing that will be a problem for you. I worked with a student from the US who lived over here for a year and the only thing that annoyed him was we don’t have mixer taps (faucets) in the toilets (bathrooms)!
Leeds is a nice, vibrant city, you will enjoy it. It has lots of hills, which might take some getting used to if you are from Minnesota!

Lol the British mentality is VERY different to that of most Americans. It’s hard to explain, but people who have interacted with both Brits and Americans will tell you the same. British people are generally more self deprecating whereas Americans (and i don’t mean this in a bad way) seem to focus a lot more on their good points (and themselves in general.) That’s what i’ve noticed from the Americans i’ve met anyway. Also British sense of humour is very sarcastic so don’t think we’re being rude to you. I will also say that British people (in general) tend to refrain from showing their emotions. I’ve noticed this more in comparison with other Europeans (especially Southern Europeans) though so i don’t know if Americans are actually similar to us in that way. Oh yeah, we drink A LOT.

Weather will be different to what you are used to (expect rain lol), and the houses are MUCH smaller too so be prepared for that.

The British are much, much more shallow than folks in Minnesota. These are the folks who brought us Maxim,FHM "page 6 girls" etc.

Drinking is a sport for many people, men and women.

On the other hand, they can also be more polite than many Americans.
