"Like water for chocolate" tradition good or bad?

Is the Mexican tradition, wherein the youngest daughter will take care of the aging mother and cannot marry, good or bad? WHy is it good/bad?
Is the tradition good or bad? How come they weren’t allowed to marry? Can’t they just marry and then take care of their aging parents at the same time?

It’s not wheater it’s good or bad, you have to see the context of the situation. In that time, no nursing homes existed and families that did not have money for maids and/or nurses to take care of elders had to take care of them themselves. Everyone feared the destiny of being alone and neglected whey they were old, so they started forcing youngest daughters to take care of them.

I do not, however, believe that a young woman who’s simply born after all her brothers or sisters should be deprived of her right to marry, have children, have a career or simply be happy because she’s caring for a parent. You can do that when you have all of the things mentioned above.

what do you think? is it better to dump mom in an old folks home where she may very well be mistreated and at least neglected? some traditions are very sound. i think we owe it to our elders to care for them in old age as they cared for us in our youth. americans often throw their elders away; so sad.

on the other hand, many neglect and abuse their children. how did americans get this way?
