What is the origin of the Chicago Blackhawks National Anthem tradition?

There is a tradition at Chicago Blackhawks hockey games whereby all the fans cheer and scream for the entire duration of the National Anthem. Does anyone know how this tradition began?

Lots of beer before the game.
